Joel Wertheimer

Joel began his career at Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP and Winston & Strawn LLP, where he worked on a broad spectrum of commercial litigation, arbitration, and antitrust matters. From 2013 to 2014, Joel clerked for the Honorable Lorna G. Schofield, United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York before returning to Winston & Strawn. In 2015, Joel left Winston & Strawn to serve in government. He worked in the West Wing for President Obama as Associate Staff Secretary, remaining through the end of the President’s term.  Beginning in January 2017, Joel served as Governor Cuomo’s Staff Secretary before deciding to return to the active practice of law.

In September 2017, Mr. Wertheimer joined the David B. Shanies Law Office, practicing in a wide range of civil rights cases, including wrongful conviction, police and prosecutorial misconduct, wrongful death, prisoners rights, and transgender rights cases. There, he honed his skills as a trial lawyer, before leaving to found Wertheimer LLC, where he practices civil rights litigation and is also a policy and political consultant.

Joel graduated with a JD from the New York University School of Law, cum laude, in 2010, and with a BA from Tufts University, magna cum laude, in 2005. He is admitted in the State of New York, the Eastern District of New York, and the Southern District of New York.
